🇭🇰 My Hong Kong Adventure: A Familiar City, But With Fresh Eyes

This wasn’t my first time visiting Hong Kong—but something about this trip felt completely different.

In the past, my image of Hong Kong was all about skyscrapers, busy crowds, and shopping malls. But this time, I slowed down. I wanted to explore more like a local, dig into those nostalgic memories from childhood, and see how much of the old Hong Kong still remains beneath the shiny surface.

So here’s my five-day journey—full of little surprises, meaningful moments, and a fresh appreciation for a city I thought I already knew.

🛬 Day 1: From Airport Wow to Peng Chau Peace

The moment I stepped off the plane, I was blown away by the massive LED screens at the airport—bright, colorful, and so sharp it made my phone screen look blurry 😂.

After soaking in the visuals, it was time to begin the transport puzzle: airport bus to Tung Chung, then to Discovery Bay, and finally a ferry to Peng Chau, where our friend lives.

It sounds like a lot, but it actually went pretty smoothly—and the scenery got better and better as we moved from city chaos to calm island vibes.

By the time we reached Peng Chau, the sky was already dimming. My friend’s mom had prepared a warm home-cooked meal for us. Simple, but absolutely comforting—especially on the first night of a trip.

After dinner, we just chilled and chatted, saving our energy for tomorrow’s adventures.

🧭 Day 2: Lantau Island Adventure – Buddha, Village & Fishing Town

We kicked off early, taking a ferry from Peng Chau to Lantau Island. The cool sea breeze and peaceful views made the trip super relaxing.

🕉️ Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha)

This is one of Hong Kong’s most iconic landmarks. The massive bronze statue sits atop a lotus flower, surrounded by six smaller statues representing key virtues.

You’ll need to climb 268 steps to reach the base—but the view from up there? Absolutely worth it. The surrounding mountains and ocean are just stunning.

Near the Buddha, there’s a famous tofu dessert shop that people rave about. I tried a bowl after the climb—smooth, slightly sweet, and refreshingly cool. Totally hit the spot!

🏯 Ngong Ping Village

Right next to the Buddha is this cultural-themed village. It’s kind of touristy, but still charming—with old-style Chinese architecture, souvenir shops, snacks, and some fun interactive exhibits.

I picked up a little charm that says “Fortune” to take some good luck home with me 😊

🌊 Tai O Fishing Village

Next stop: Tai O—a quiet fishing village that feels frozen in time. The stilt houses built over the water are so unique and old-school. You can walk around the narrow streets, check out dried seafood shops, and if you’re lucky, spot the famous pink dolphins (we didn’t see any 😅).

This whole day gave me three very different sides of Hong Kong—from spiritual to cultural to nostalgic. My feet were tired, but my heart was full.

🏙️ Day 3: City Views, Hidden Parks & Hong Kong’s Nightlife

Time to explore the city side of Hong Kong!

🎡 Central Waterfront & Ferris Wheel

We started the day at the Central harborfront with the iconic Hong Kong Observation Wheel. We didn’t ride it, but the views from ground level were great for photos.

🚋 Peak Tram & Victoria Peak

Next up was the legendary Peak Tram. It’s super steep and has been running since 1888—riding it felt like stepping into history.

At the top, the panoramic views of Hong Kong were just insane. Skyscrapers, mountains, and sea—all in one frame. Postcard material!

🌿 Hong Kong Park

After coming back down, we visited Hong Kong Park. It’s a green oasis in the middle of the city with trees, waterfalls, and even a bird sanctuary. A great place to take a break.

🌃 Night Out in Lan Kwai Fong

In the evening, we checked out Lan Kwai Fong—Hong Kong’s famous nightlife district. It was packed with bars, music, and people from all over the world.

Even though I didn’t party hard, I loved the vibe—so lively and international!

🧧 Day 4: Local Eats, Hidden Gems & Iconic Night Views

🛗 Morning Escalator Ride & Dim Sum Delight

We started the day by riding the Mid-Levels Escalator—the world’s longest outdoor covered escalator! It weaves through old buildings, cute cafes, and shops. Felt like gliding through the heart of the city.

We then found a traditional dim sum place—and wow. Best dim sum I’ve ever had. Shrimp dumplings, pork buns, turnip cakes… everything was just perfect. Nothing beats dim sum in Hong Kong!

🏢 Monster Building

Next stop: the famous “Monster Building” (Yick Cheong Building). Its dense, towering structure became a viral photo spot, and sure enough, we saw tons of tourists snapping pics. Just remember it’s a real residential building, so stay respectful.

🛍️ Temple Street Night Market

In the evening, we wandered through Temple Street Night Market. There’s everything from fortune tellers to food stalls to… more adult stuff 😅

It’s gritty and old-school, but gives you a look at the raw, local side of Hong Kong.

🌆 Avenue of Stars

We ended the day at the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui. The night view over Victoria Harbour is magical—traditional boats, twinkling skyscrapers, and statues of stars like Bruce Lee and Anita Mui. A beautiful way to end a long day.

🏝️ Day 5: A Peaceful Farewell in Peng Chau

Today was our last day in Hong Kong, and we decided to keep it slow.

🥟 Breakfast Dim Sum Again!

Started with another round of dim sum in Peng Chau. Quiet, no rush, just delicious food and good vibes.

🥾 A Nature Walk with a Twist

We went on a casual hike and unexpectedly learned about Hong Kong’s “4 Deadliest Plants,” all found on the island!

  • Upas Tree – poisonous sap
  • Strychnine Tree – contains deadly alkaloids
  • Bell Flower – toxic if eaten
  • Aconite – deadly root

Pretty wild to think this peaceful island hides such dangerous plants! 😮

The views were amazing though—ocean, fresh air, and silence. A perfect last morning.

✈️ Goodbye, Hong Kong… For Now

This trip changed how I see Hong Kong. Beyond the tall buildings and shopping streets, there’s nature, culture, and hidden charm waiting to be explored.
