Ko Samet – A Tropical Getaway Near Bangkok & Pattaya

If you’re looking for a beautiful island that’s not too far from Bangkok or Pattaya, Ko Samet is a perfect choice. It only takes about 3 to 4 hours from Bangkok by van and boat, making it ideal for a weekend escape or a short trip.

This island may be small, but it’s known for its soft white sand, clear turquoise water, and a calm, relaxed vibe compared to tourist-heavy spots like Phuket or Koh Samui. Whether you want to chill by the beach, take a dip, sip on fresh coconut juice, or enjoy a seaside massage, Ko Samet has it all.

The island offers a mix of beach types – lively ones like Hat Sai Kaew (also known as Diamond Beach), where you can catch fire shows at night, or peaceful ones like Ao Wai for those who want to escape the crowd.

Since most of Ko Samet is part of a national park, there’s a small entrance fee (around 200 baht for foreigners), but it’s well worth it. The island is clean, well-preserved, and feels close to nature.

Whether you’re running from city stress or just want a no-fuss beach holiday, Ko Samet is a little paradise worth visiting.

🚌 Day 1: From Pattaya to Ko Samet – Giant Statues & Beachside Dinner

We left Pattaya and hopped on a mini van to Rayong Pier – the main gateway to Ko Samet. From there, we had two options: a private speedboat (fast but pricey) or a public boat (slower but much cheaper). I went for the public ferry. It saved me some cash and gave me a more local experience with Thai travelers heading to nearby islands.

After about 30 minutes, I arrived at Ko Samet. The first thing I saw? A massive bronze statue staring at me – with a fierce face that genuinely startled me for a second! Not sure if it was a god or a mythical character, but it was definitely memorable.

As it was getting dark, I headed straight to my hotel – Rainbow Sky Hotel Samet, a simple 3-star hotel. It wasn’t fancy, but had all the essentials for a comfy stay.

After checking in, I took a short walk to Sai Kaew Beach. This is the liveliest beach on the island and the perfect spot for my first evening. I had a chill dinner at a beachfront restaurant, listening to the waves crash as I ate. A great, peaceful start to my island journey.

🏖️ Day 2: Total Chill Mode + Thai Hotpot by the Sea

Woke up with zero plans – and that felt amazing.

I headed back to Sai Kaew Beach, laid out a towel, and just relaxed all day. The sand was soft, the water was clear, and the vibe was so calm. I listened to music, dipped my feet in the sea, and simply enjoyed doing nothing. That’s what vacations are for, right?

At night, I tried something different for dinner – Thai-style BBQ hotpot (Mookata) at a beachside restaurant. You grill meat on top and boil veggies in broth around it. It’s delicious, fun to cook at the table, and super satisfying with the sea breeze in your face.

Another perfect beach day.

🏝️ Day 3: Motorbike Island Tour + Best Pad Thai Ever

Time for some exploring!

I rented a motorbike for 400 baht for the day. First stop was Ao Phai – a smaller beach near Sai Kaew with a chill vibe. Then I rode to Ao Phrao on the west side, where the resorts were fancier and the views more romantic.

After that, I headed to Wong Duean Bay, part of the national park. There was a small fee to enter, but the lush green scenery, peaceful beach, and chance to snorkel made it totally worth it.

By the time I got back near Sai Kaew Beach, I was starving. I found a roadside Pad Thai stall, sat down, and had the best Pad Thai I’ve eaten for only 80 baht. So simple, so good. I nearly ordered another plate!

🌴 Day 4: Fancy Hotel Vibes + Seaside Massage Bliss

Time to upgrade! I moved to a fancier place I found online: Kala Krang Nueng. The photos looked dreamy, and the room didn’t disappoint – stylish design, and a bathtub in the middle of the living area.

…Except, the tub had no water. Yeah, just for looks. A bit of a letdown, but still, the room was cozy and Instagram-worthy.

Back to the beach! I went to Sai Kaew again and treated myself to a beachfront massage. It was sooo relaxing with the sound of waves in the background. Definitely different (and better) than a regular spa.

Of course, dinner was back at my favorite Pad Thai stall. Delicious food, cheap prices, and the friendly owner remembered us from the night before!

🌊 Final Day: 6-Island Hopping Adventure

Couldn’t leave Ko Samet without doing something epic. So I booked a half-day island-hopping tour for 700 baht.

We left at noon and visited six islands:

  • Koh Taloo
  • Koh Kham
  • Koh Kudee
  • Koh Kruay
  • Koh Khang Kaow
  • Koh Plateen

Some islands had beaches, others were great for snorkeling. There was even lunch included on the boat. The weather was perfect, and the sea was stunning in every direction.

Back by sunset, and guess what I did for dinner? Yep – that same Pad Thai again. I’m officially addicted!
