The memorial was established to pay tribute to the Australian and British servicemen who lost their lives during the Sandakan-Ranau Death Marches, marking the site of the last prisoners of war (POW) encampment. Dr. Othman Minudin, the landowner, generously contributed the historical land for the creation of this memorial space. On August 27, 2009, the memorial was officially unveiled.
The Death March, occurring between January and August 1945, stands as one of the most egregious atrocities committed against Australian soldiers in World War II. Only six Australians managed to survive their internment in Sandakan and Ranau. This tragic event involved approximately 1,047 British and Australian prisoners of war, and the Sandakan-Ranau Death Marches concluded at Kialungan, Kampung Kenipir – The Last Camp, on August 27, 1945.
