An hour’s journey from Kota Kinabalu to Pekan Kundasang will take you through Pekan Nabalu, a small town located within the Kota Belud district of Sabah. This town is the first highland stop where you can enjoy views of Mount Kinabalu and explore various stalls selling local food, arts and crafts, as well as handmade souvenirs from the surrounding communities. It’s a suitable rest stop to unwind and stretch your legs before continuing your journey.
What makes this town interesting? Here, you’ll find numerous stalls selling local vegetables and fruits. Among the exotic items available are Bosou (fermented fish) and Tuhau (a plant with a scent resembling a beetle) that are abundant in this area. If you feel adventurous, you can give them a try.
It’s a must to visit the arts and crafts souvenir stalls located next to the fruit and vegetable stalls. Various crafts and souvenirs are sold here, including clothing, fabrics, and traditional tools for the Kadazan/Dusun and Bajau communities. Items like Sompoton (traditional musical instrument), Tekiding (wooden carrying bag), and beaded accessories such as bracelets and necklaces are widely available as keepsakes.
