The complex encompasses not just the museum itself but also features an ethnobotanic garden, and a heritage village. The primary structure also serves as the home for the Sabah Art Gallery. Various galleries within the complex focus on Islamic civilization, archaeology and history, natural history, as well as ceramics and brassware. The museum’s mission is to gather, safeguard, protect, and document ethnographic, archaeological, historical, numismatic, art-historical, botanical, zoological, and mineralogical collections from across the state. Additionally, it aims to conduct research on significant and intriguing aspects of Sabah’s history, culture, and both social and natural history
Next to the museum, there are traditional houses (longhouses) belonging to the local indigenous people that visitors can enter and explore. Inside, there are also selling traditional handmade crafts. One particularly unique aspect is the presence of their traditional game, Langsaran.



Upon entering through the museum’s main gate, you will encounter a very large specimen of a whale bone.




Downstairs showcases the history and culture of the local people, while upstairs features local animal specimens, traditional clothing, souvenirs representing various countries, and more.
